What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient Indian practise which helps combine the breath, movement and meditation to release tension in the body and mind, leading to a more healthy and harmonious way of life.

The Benefits of Yoga

Regular practise of yoga can:

-          Build strength and stamina

-          Develop flexibility and balance

-          Promote relaxation and a sense of well-being

-          Improve concentration and awareness

-          Relieve tension

Who can practise Yoga?

Almost everyone can practise yoga, regardless of age or ability.  Yoga promotes self awareness so that you work within your own body's limitations.  It is non competitive and every posture should be practised to the best of your own ability.  As your practice progresses in this way, you will find that your flexibility improves.  An inner smile and a bit of gentleness can save us from pushing ourselves to the point of strain and injury.

What to expect

Classes are 90 minutes long and consist of various postures (asanas) which stretch and tone the body and work alongside an awareness of the breath.  Classes always finish with a quiet period of relaxation (generally done lying down) to absorb the benefits of the practise.

Getting started

Yoga is practised in bare feet although it is good to have a pair of socks at hand for the final relaxation.

Please wear loose comfortable layers.  You may like to bring a blanket or a towel.

You will need a non-slip yoga mat which I have available for sale (in purple) for £14.

Please avoid heavy meals for 2 hours beforehand and avoid drinking too much water before you start.  However, please make sure you have some water once the class has finished.  Also it is preferable for you to go to the toilet so that your bowels and bladder are empty before practice.
